Glass on the other hand is ‘amorphous’, so it does not have any natural planes to split, or cleave to, making it much more suitable for making sharp edges.Ī type of naturally occurring glass that has already been in use since the Stone Age as a blade is obsidian. The difficulty is that diamond crystals tend to ‘cleave’ in what’s called an octahedral fashion, which doesn’t allow for a very sharp blade cross-section. The hardest material out there is diamond, so logically a diamond knife should be the sharpest type. So there is an element of practicality as well. The trade off, of course, as we’ve mentioned already in our article about Samurai swords, is that very sharp blades can be very brittle, and it’s no use to anyone if parts of a knife break off while it’s being used. Leaving aside our knives of course, there are many earnest scientific discussions/arguments on the web as to which material makes, or would make the sharpest blade. Which brings us to the oft discussed topic of the sharpest blade in the world. Even handling an obsidian scalpel takes great care because one can unknowingly cut themselves without pain because the laceration is so fine.If anyone has earned the right to be a bit nerdy about knives, then it’s us. Under a microscope, an obsidian scalpel divides individual cells in half, while steel scalpel incisions look like they were made by a chainsaw. The smaller the angstrom, the finer the blade.Ī household razor blade (King Gillette produced the first safety shaving blade in 1904) is about 300-600 angstroms, while an obsidian blade is about 30 angstroms. Angstroms are a unit of measurement between atomic planes in a crystal. Obsidian can produce cutting edges many times finer than the best steel… and obsidian blades first produced about 2,500 years ago in Mesoamerica can still cut today. Reusability is cost-efficient, but sharpness produces cleaner and more precise cuts with quicker healing and less scarring. However, obsidian… a type of volcanic glass… has re-emerged. Stainless steel later took over, due to its reusability and resistance to corrosion. Years ago, most scalpels were made of nickel or chromium-plated carbon steel. Other features like shape, balance, uniformity and dependability are critical. After the 1st and 2nd World Wars, the American industry caught up in manufacturing leadership.Īs elective surgery rose to prominence, the individual needs out of a scalpel have morphed and now must meet certain requirements. For a time period, barber-surgeons were prominent in the US, embellishing their scalpels as part of the art of their craft. America historically has always imported knives. Surgical instrument-making, as a profession, was noted in the 18 th century in England, France, Holland and Germany. Roman surgeons relied on armorers who made cutlery for wartime as well. Copper in 3500 BC, bronze and iron in 1400 BC. How the scalpel was made has varied over time.īlades were initially composed of sharpened stones like flint, jade or obsidian, but metal blades replaced them. ![]() Interestingly, the shape of the scalpel likely has not changed much over time. Wounds happen on the battlefield while incisions happen in the operating room, so “scalpel” implies security associated with healing. Furthermore, a “knife” can be used by anybody, but a “scalpel” is only used by a surgeon. If anyone else takes a knife to another person, it’s a criminal attack. “Knife” connotes danger and is more likened to a weapon associated with mutilation and death. ![]() Modern surgeons have embraced the term “scalpel” over “knife”. ![]() “Scalpel” comes from the Latin word, “scallpellus”. Hippocrates may have been the first to describe the surgical knife, termed the “macairion”, a smaller version of a Lacedaemonian sword called a “machaira”. Flint knives were used as scrapers to cut through the skull in trepanation. It’s evolved, changing form, to meet our needs.Įvidence of knives used in medicine may be traced to the Mesolithic period around 8000 BC. The knife is hypothesized to have existed for more than 2 million years, longer than modern humans have walked the Earth. Amongst the list of the most useful tools in human history, the knife is usually at the top.

Scenery looks Summary - NGS right now is basically an open beta/demo Pro's Significant graphics update over PSO2 Can be fun to play Scenery looks amazing Satisfying combat Con's Severe lag issues Barely any content at present Prone to crashing and other major issues Heavy Korean style grindfest, think BDO but with no content Balance issues with some classes especially Melee Some enemies have a bit too much HP, making some battles boring Less than 20 quests/side quests? Summary - NGS right now is basically an open beta/demo It used to be a sci-fi action game, not a hentai action game. Player dress like almost nude girls with big **** everywhere in the game right now. Or franchise already dead?! It's rare to see a sci-fi character style these days. Are they start listening to players? Do they really care about players? Did they try hard to keep the game alive? And why should I care? ิBecause I don't want to see phantasy star series become a dead franchise. (and some item for update are behind Time-gating.) -new function and more QoL update are coming? is this just all basic function system should have from old PSO2? I see nothing really new. (yeah… that only way to preventing player burnout content too fast.) -new gear (5 star) item need more grind for update and unlock thing. RNG item drop rate, still like Korean MMO game style. have a lot more gacha, but.most item are come from old base PSO2. new enemy, new boss in game? Meh.is just reskin. new map and new story? Content still feel empty. Come back to this one in a year, it may be a different picture by then. That can change as SEGA adds more, but with all of the server and economic issues that this game sees, I reckon that's a long way off. This game enters into a market where free-to-play MMOs are very common, and many come with worthwhile content, but at the moment, this game doesnt compete for our time. The "endgame" weapons and armor do nothing to even change the gameplay or flow of combat, everything is just ann increase to atk power so you can.I guess grind PSE Bursts slightly faster? The foundations for a GREAT game are there, but one could say that about a myriad different Betas out there. It's not a reflection of the player overcoming any difficult challenge, time trials, or boss fights, it's basically an indication of how much theyve just grinded. Only in PSO 2, Battle Power (gearscore) just reflects your characters power. And the carrot on the stick to encourage play is basically gearscore, or Light Level akin to Destiny or several other MMO's. No dungeons, no team challenges, no pvp, no extra lore locations, no real way to spend the time, just go and grind PSE bursts. Once that is complete, the player finds themselves art about level 15 of 20 total levels, and the only meaningful way to level up is to grind the same enemies in the same regions for hours on end. There are 20 skillpoints in total, and the skills are usable on each class tree, meaning that cocoons and towers are worth doing only once, then it's just a matter of getting faster times.on tutorial missions. There are of course additional challenges such as Towers and Cocoons, which are little more than glorified tutorials that award Skillpoints for your skill tree. All of these are extremely mundane and boring, they all essentially boil down to "Go to X area, and kill Y amount of enemies".not very exciting at all. ![]() In total there are around 20 total quests outside of Dailies and Weeklies. For also onboard are an anamorphic zoom mode for people with anamorphic lenses, Sony’s 24p True Cinema system (via the two provided HDMIs) for purer playback of Blu-ray’s 1080p/24 format, and Bravia Engine 2. Yet more black level support comes from the option to run the projector’s lamp at a low output level, and from a black level boosting circuit tucked away in one of the many well-presented onscreen menus.Īnd still we’re not done with the VW80’s picture features. For as well as being able to select between two levels of ‘aggression’ for the system in terms of how much brightness it cuts out, you can also adjust the speed of the iris’s reaction time to slow, fast or ‘recommended’ set the iris manually or even turn off iris control completely. Not forgetting, of course, that it’s not a ‘native’ figure, but one that depends on reducing and increasing the image’s brightness.Ī particularly nice thing about this dynamic iris is the flexibility Sony has apportioned to it. Thanks to this dynamic iris, the VW80 claims a prodigious contrast ratio of 60,000:1 – so far as we can recall, the highest such figure we’ve seen on a projector to date. Yet more impressively high-tech fine-tuning comes from an electronic panel alignment feature that enables you to achieve a perfect alignment of the red, green and blue elements within each pixel.Īnd then there’s the VW80’s ‘Advanced Iris’ system, which can automatically adjust the amount of light let through the projector’s iris in response to how dark or bright a particular image is, thereby making black levels more convincing and expanding the possible contrast range. The beauty of this system is that it lets you pinpoint much more accurately the setting where either or both noise reduction routines go from aiding to actually spoiling the picture. For this allows you to pick your preferred block noise and mosquito noise combination by shifting a point along a ‘graph’ where Block NR runs along the horizontal axis and Mosquito noise runs up the vertical axis. Sony’s imaginative approach to user interfaces can be seen, too, with the MPEG noise reduction system the VW80 carries. We should say that we don’t recommend messing about with RCP unless you’re pretty confident about what you’re doing, but that doesn’t make it any less worthwhile as a feature. This may look rather creepy at times, but it’s a truly inspired way of allowing you to see precisely what impact your adjustments are having. And so if you’re tweaking the red element, the picture is black and white except for where there’s a red element in the picture. While you’re using it, this system cunningly knocks out of the image you’re watching every other colour than the one you’re trying to adjust. ![]() The way it works is by letting you adjust the red, green, blue, yellow, magenta and cyan colour elements in the picture on an individual basis, using an adjustable ‘pie-chart’ interface that allows you to expand a particular colour’s range and/or position in the colour spectrum. In doing so it boosts contrast and, interestingly, reduces the appearance of judder, since it gives your eyes time to blend one frame into the next.Īlso good to find is Sony’s Real Colour Processing, a remarkably sophisticated toolkit for fine-tuning colours to within an inch of their lives. Of these the latter is the most straightforward, as at heart it’s simply Sony’s take on the idea of inserting extra, newly calculated frames of image data to make movement in the picture look more fluid and sharp.įilm Projection is much less straightforward, but by and large what it tries to do is insert blank, dark frames of image data in a bid to recreate the sensation of watching a film in the cinema. MotionFlow on the VW80 comprises two elements, both individually adjustable within the onscreen menus: Film Projection, and Motion Enhancement. It’s just as well, then, that the VW80 gives a very good account of itself on the specification front – especially with its inclusion of the intriguing high-end MotionFlow processing first discovered on Sony’s flagship (not counting the stupid money and now aging Qualia 004) VPL-VW200 projector. ![]() For with a pretty high estimated retail price of £4,995, it’s going to have to go some to make its mark against much cheaper high-spec DLP models like the InFocus IN82 and IN83, or JVC D-ILA models like the HD1 and HD100, not to mention JVC’s imminent new D-ILA models, the HD350 and HD750. ![]() With competition at the quality end of the projection market getting ever more fierce, Sony’s VPL-VW80 arrives at a crucial time for the brand’s exclusive SXRD technology. ![]() Historically, there were technical hurdles to overcome because you needed multiple pieces of software, in addition to a Usenet subscription, to get set up.
